‘Metropole Bakmak’
Büyük kentler, her açıdan bulundukları ülkelerin özeti gibidir.

'A Glance at the Metropolis'

Big cities always encapsulate the substance of the country they are part of. The accumulation of the financial capital and the agglomeration of the business life in metropolises make these cities cultural, social and economic centers. Metropolises, as focal points of human migration from other cities and other countries, also contain conditions for the financial capital to protect itself. The ideological manipulation is at the utmost level, and people who spend most part of the day in working life deem themselves lucky. Metropolises trigger loneliness. The urban dweller, though surrounded by many people, is lonely; in colossal buildings, they feel oppressed as the ones under a divine power in cathedrals. They gradually cannot experience any pleasure in those buildings other than the one of getting higher and higher. These places engender irrelevant feelings; feelings that would be more relevant for novel characters of the underground literature: foul-mouthed, weary, and apathetic…

Things may always go awry. In these life spaces where both material and emotional exploitation is the rule, many dangers abound in streets, leading you to most unpredictable struggles. Metropolises are in today’s world centers of not only capitalism, but also of greatest rebellions. City streets inseminate the movements undermining the whole system. Suddenly you can find yourself in an unrelenting fight.

“A Glance at Metropolis” provides us with clues about the way things are going in contemporary world. Contemplating from a distance sometimes does not mean inertia, and may attract and move the viewer. It may encourage the viewer to get closer with people at the far end. Jak Baruh looks at the contemporary world from beyond continents, from New York. He brings to our perspective faraway streets, buildings, people and struggles; and in sharing them, makes us witnesses of what he sees there.
